EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - The Madison County State's Attorney's Office charged a 51-year-old Granite City for allegedly attacking his handicapped roommate.
According to Captain T. Mike Dixon, spokesman for the Madison County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a residence in the 5400 block of Maryville Road on Monday, January 21 in response to a domestic disturbance.
Upon their arrival at the scene, deputies met with a handicapped occupant of the home, who reported being attacked by his housemate, identified as Ecker Matthews.
Dixon said the victim told deputies that Matthews told him he couldn't live in the home anymore. The victim said he was knocked out of his wheelchair during the attack, but managed to get back in his wheelchair and leave the residence.
The victim went to a nearby business, where he contacted the sheriff's office, Dixon said.
Matthews was arrested at the scene and charged with a felony count of aggravated battery, due to the fact that the victim was physically handicapped.
Ecker Matthews remains jailed on $50,000 bond.
