According to Captain T. Mike Dixon, a sheriff's office spokesman, the fire occurred in rural Troy, Illinois on Sunday, January 27 around 1:20 a.m. Sheriff's deputies and the Troy Fire Department were called to the intersection of Lebanon and South Liberty roads after a passing motorist saw the pieces of heavy construction equipment ablaze.
The interior cabs of a back hoe and excavator were engulfed in flames, Dixon said. Both fires were extinguished without incident.
The equipment sustained substantial damage in excess of $300,000.
Dixon said the fires were "suspicious in nature" and the sheriff's office is investigating the matter.
