St. Louis (KSDK)-- Unless a budget deal is reached five days from now, a massive round of automatic government spending cuts will go into effect, impacting a lot of government services we take for granted and setting into motion thousands of layoffs.

U.S. Congressman, Republican John Shimkus tells NewsChannel 5 he doesn't think the two sides will reach a deal before Friday's deadline.

" We have been fighting this battle now for two years," Rep. Shimkus said. "When are we ever going to cut any money?"

Of the $85 billion in cuts every year, half of that would come from the Pentagon and the other half from non-defense programs--everything from education to national parks.
