ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) - The director of the Rockwood Board of Education has announced his resignation, effective immediately.

The resignation announcement comes less than a week after an audit criticized how Director Steve Smith voted on issues involving a construction company he worked for.

In the note Smith sent to the Board of Education, he said "...education and Prop S must be in the forefront of the community dialogue and vision. I have become convinced that there are people who will not allow this to happen if I am still on the Board. As I step aside, I challenge all to now focus on our children."

Smith also said he never knowingly voted to benefit Glenn Construction, a firm that received a lot of projects in the Rockwood School District.

Board members will meet March 6 to formally accept Smith's resignation.  The board will discuss the process of accepting applications to fill the position in April.  Replacing Smith must be made by majority vote.  There's no word on when that vote could take place.

The Rockwood School District Board of Education's policy reads as follows:

"Whenever a vacancy occurs on the board of education, the remaining members of the board will by majority vote, select an individual to fill the vacant position until the next annual school election.

"In filling the vacancy, the board will inform the community and solicit applications.  In addition, the board may affirmatively solicit qualified community members to apply for the vacant position. the board, or a committee designated by the board will screen the applicants and will select applicants for board interview.  Candidate interviews and the vote taken to fill the vacancy will occur in an open session meeting of the board."

Steve Smith was elected to the Board in April 2011.

A citizens' watchdog group called Rockwood Stakeholders for Real Solutions is calling for the resignations of Rockwood Board of Education President Janet Strate, and directors Matt Doell, Stephen Banton, and Keith Kinder for "failing their fiduciary duty to the stakeholders of the district."

Rockwood Stakeholders for Real Solutions is also asking for Superintendent Dr. Bruce Borchers to be released from his contract, which is effective through June 30, 2016. They would like him to resign, effective June 30, 2013.
