ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - BJC HealthCare is being singled out in a new national study on workplace wellness programs.

Researchers wanted to find out how effective the programs could be.

Barnes Jewish started an employee wellness program in 2005, offering insurance discounts as an incentive. Workers signed a pledge to eat healthy, exercise, and try to quit smoking.

Over two years researchers found hospitalizations dropped dramatically among BJC employees, but medication and other outpatient costs basically erased any health care savings.

The BJC president says encouraging employees to make healthy lifestyle decisions is, not just about the bottom line.
