(CNN) - The number of children with autism appears to be significantly higher than previously thought.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a study today saying one in 50 school-aged children have autism. Just last year, research suggested one in 88 children have an autism spectrum disorder.

Not everyone agrees with the new assessment.

The most recent findings were the result of a survey and based on parent reporting.

The earlier study was based on medical and educational records and reviews.
