ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KSDK) - There are more schools in St. Clair County with financial trouble than anywhere else in the state of Illinois.
That was the bad news from the Illinois State School Board.
The board met in Belleville where it announced the overall number of schools in poor financial health has more than double from last year, and it's expected to get even worse next year.
The state is behind on paying local districts money they're owed, and is paying less than in years past.
Belleville District 201 is one of the schools on the list. The state is behind more than $2 million in funds owed to the district, but the superintendent says he can't blame the state board.
A total of 10 metro east schools received the state's lowest rating for financial health, and the state superintendent says that number could grow with the effects of sequestration at the federal level.
