(The Chirp) -- The St. Louis Cardinals have scheduled a press conference at 9 a.m. CST, where it's expected that they'll formally announce the reported signing of Opening Day starter, Adam Wainwright to a multimillion dollar, multi-year deal.

The story broke early Wednesday evening, but just a few hours before, Wainwright sat down for this interview with KSDK Sports Director Rene Knott.  In the final question, Knott asks about a future deal and the lure of free agency.  Wainwright's answer was more of a message to the Cardinal Nation fan base, still reeling from the departure of Albert Pujols.

Now, we'll never really know if that smile on Wainwright's face was his poker tell or not.  But regardless, when was the last time you heard a professional athlete tell a fan base he knows he has a good thing going?

Wainwright, 31, missed the entire 2011 season after rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but bounced back with a 14-13 record last year, including a 3.94 earned run average in 198 2/3 innings over 32 starts.

The 6-foot-7, 235-pounder originally inked a six-year, $36 million deal in 2008 which was set to expire at the end of the 2013 season. Since then, Wainwright has finished in the top three for the National League Cy Young award twice, being runner-up to Roy Halladay in 2010.

After making his MLB debut in 2005, the veteran righty has totaled 80 wins and 48 losses for a career 3.15 ERA in 214 contests -- 151 of which have been starts.
