Hazelwood tornado identified by National Weather Service

HAZELWOOD, Mo. (KSDK) - The National Weather Service has found damage consistent with an EF2 tornado in the Bridgeton/Hazelwood area.

The first damage was detected on Pennridge Drive, just northeast of St. Charles Rock Road.

The path of the storm winds northeast, crossing Highway 370 and continues east/northeast of Hazelwood West High School.

An EF2 tornado usually has winds between 111 and 135 miles per hour.

No one was seriously injured in the storm, but thousands were still without power on Thursday.

An Ameren lineman was killed Thursday morning while working to restore power to homes in St. Ann, Mo.

Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency in Missouri Wednesday night and toured storm damage Thursday afternoon.

Straight-line winds and three microbursts caused damage along a 30 mile path from Union to Chesterfield.

The Hill neighborhood was also hit by an EF0 tornado Wednesday night. Mayor Francis Slay toured the damage Thursday and says 48 homes and three businesses were damaged. One of those homes has been condemned.
