HAZELWOOD, Mo. (KSDK) - Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency Wednesday night in areas affected by the storms.
He toured damaged areas Thursday and praised the local response from Hazelwood and surrounding communities that are helping residents clean up.

People living in the hardest hit areas were told by Gov. Nixon to "have confidence" and that their community "will be rebuilt."
Gov. Nixon is promising state support for the damage that he says is worse than what the mayor of Hazelwood thought it was Wednesday night in the dark.

Residents suffered mainly bumps and bruises. There were no major injuries.
Gov. Nixon also toured damage sustained in Sullivan, Mo.
