HAZELWOOD, Mo. (KSDK) - Students in the Hazelwood School District didn't have school Thursday, and everyone is working hard to restore power and bring kids back.

Diana Gulotta, a spokesperson for the Hazelwood School District, says classes are cancelled Friday at West High School, West Middle School McNair Elementary, Russell Elementary, Armstrong Elementary, and West Early Childhood Center. After school activities are also cancelled.

All other schools will have class on Friday.

The tornado came at a time when, for many students, the all-important Missouri state academic tests begin next week. The twister damaged many homes where students study for those tests.

The tornado ravaged the Chez Orleans apartment complex where 18-year old Hazelwood West senior Thadeus Smith lives.

He says he's continuing to study for those exams.

Hazelwood schools Superintendent Grayling Tobias says if necessary, the district can ask the state board to delay the exams because of emergency circumstances.

That decision will be made at a later date.
