HAZELWOOD, Mo. (KSDK) - The Hazelwood community is slowly putting the pieces back together after the tornadoes hit April 10. The storms caused $3.5 million of damage, not including the loss of personal items.

The Teson Garden Apartment Complex was hit hard. Roughly half the buildings were severely damaged and are still uninhabitable.

Patty Daniel's building had the most damage and was the first one hit by the tornado.

"I mean how many times do you hear the tornado warnings go off and you never think it's going to hit you," she said.

Daniels grabbed her two young boys when the tornado hit and put them in the bathtub, covering them with towels to protect them from flying glass.

She may never get to move back into the apartment where she's lived for eight years and it will be at least four to five months before she can move into a different unit within the complex.

"The kids go to school close by so we always come by and just kind of check and see how the work is going," she said through tears.

Daniels is currently living with a relative in senior citizen complex while she looks for an apartment complex manager that allows affordable month-to-month leases.

She is however, grateful that her family is safe and knows she'll make a home for her sons again soon.
