Affton, Mo. (KSDK) - A group of Affton middle school students came together to help a classmate with a mystery illness on Sunday.

They organized the Affton "5" charity run in honor of Rogers Middle School sixth grader Mitchell Herndon.

In a span of just a few months, Herndon went from a healthy 12-year-old boy to not being able to run, and then not being able to walk or get up from the floor on his own.

He's receiving treatment at St. Louis Children's hospital and is now doing much better.

The money raised during the event will benefit the hospital and the Herndon family.

Mike Bush will tell Mitchell's story in a "Making a Difference" piece on Tuesday, April 30 on Newschannel 5 at 10.
