ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - The St. Louis Cardinals purchased the contract of a minor leaguer ahead of Monday night's series opener against the Cincinnati Reds, and optioned one of their pitchers to facilitate the move.
The Cardinals acquired right-handed pitcher Seth Maness from the Memphis Redbirds. He will wear #61 and is expected to make his Major League debut against the Reds.
Maness, 24, was named Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2012. He has 38 minor league career starts, working six or more innings in 27 of those games. In four starts at Memphis, Maness has a 2-2 record with a 4.32 ERA, 18 strikeouts and just 3 walks.
Marc Rzepczynski, the left-handed pitcher who came to the Cardinals in 2011 as part of the deal to send Colby Rasmus to the Toronto Blue Jays, made nine appearances in the 2013 season, allowing 7 runs in 8 innings of work with no decisions.
