CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - The governing board of the Southern Illinois University system is poised told hold its first meeting since Gov. Pat Quinn appointed two new board members with approval from the state's senate.

The Democratic governor appointed the former head of the state's National Guard, Randal Thomas, and former SIU-Edwardsville history professor Shirley Portwood last week.

That's after those choices were vetted with senate lawmakers who spiked three of Quinn's previous candidates.

WSIU Radio reports that Thomas and Portwood are expected to attend Thursday's board meeting in Carbondale. That's when the panel is to take up a new tuition and fee schedule for the next school year, as well as a tentative budget and various construction projects.
