EAST ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - East St. Louis police say the death of a 1-year-old girl appears to be an accident.
The child was playing outside Saturday afternoon with her mother, father, siblings, and friends. The toddler was trying to follow after a couple of other kids when she stepped in front of a parked car.
Police say an 11-year-old boy was in that car. Officers say the boy took his mother's car keys without her knowledge and went into the car to listen to the radio. The boy turned the car on, and put it into gear. That's when the car hit the toddler. She died of a head injury.
The girl's mother says this is tough on everyone involved.
"I am praying for the boys too," said Whitney Cole. "Trying to hold it together for me and my family because everyone is taking it harder than I am. It hasn't hit me yet but I know it's coming."
The 11-year-old boy who put the car in gear and another boy, who was also in the front seat, was taken to a juvenile detention center in Belleville for questioning but charges are not expected.
