ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Students from the unaccredited school districts of Normandy and Riverview Gardens had until Thursday afternoon to submit paperwork to transfer to accredited school districts.

Normandy and Riverview Gardens had to choose an accredited school district to provide bus service for students wishing to transfer. Normandy chose the Francis Howell School District and Riverview Gardens chose the Mehlville School District.

The Mehlville School District says it did not have room to accommodate all of the students wishing to transfer to their district, so Riverview Gardens chose the Kirkwood School District as an alternative, also promising bus service to students transferring to that district.

There are more students who want to transfer then there is space available. So administrators will use a lottery system to decide which students are granted their first choice.

If they don't get their top pick, students will be assigned to their second or third district of choice. If none of their choices are available, parents will be called so they can work through other options. Administrators in Normandy and Riverview are telling parents to keep their phones on because the district will be calling parents regarding their choices.

They hope to have everyone assigned to a school by Friday.

According to the Cooperating School Districts, at least 100 students changed their number one pick from Mehlville to Kirkwood. Earlier this week, more than 600 students in Riverview Gardens applied to go to Mehlville, but that district can only take 220 kids. The Kirkwood School District has said it can accept around 175 students.
