PULASKI COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) - Both directions of Interstate 44 reopened Thursday morning after waters swept over the highway Wednesday, closing it for most of the day.
I-44 was closed at mile marker 172 near Jerome, Mo., backing up traffic for almost 20 miles in spots.
Waters are receding in south-central Missouri, which experienced more than 24 hours of flooding Tuesday and Wednesday, prompting Gov. Jay Nixon to declare a state of emergency and order the deployment of 50 members of the Missouri National Guard to the area.
A woman and her son are dead after being swept away by flood waters. The boy's body was found two days ago, and authorities are still searching for the mother. More than 100 homes and businesses in the region are damaged.
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported that the woman's body had been found. It has not.
