LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. (KSHB/CNN) - The sheriff of a town in Missouri is puzzled after finding a three foot alligator in a nearby lake.
A group of fishermen first spotted the reptile over the weekend and alerted the caretaker, who then called the sheriff.
Authorities say the caretaker got scared and shot the animal. Eventually it was caught and taken to a sanctuary for abandoned exotic animals.
Caretakers there say the gator probably got too big for its owner to handle and they let it go.
If the alligator's owner is found, they could face animal cruelty charges.
