ST. LOUIS (KSDK & AP) - Nearly 55,000 thousand fans bought a ticket to see the second international soccer match in St. Louis this summer. It was the biggest soccer crowd ever in the Gateway City.
A buzz pulsed through the crowd as some of the biggest soccer superstars on the planet took the pitch at the Edward Jones Dome.
Real Madrid got another highlight goal from Cristiano Ronaldo and was dominant in its preseason finale with a 3-0 victory over Inter Milan.
Kaka's second-effort header started the scoring in the 11th minute for Real Madrid, which was 5-0-1 in the preseason and allowed one or fewer goals in all but one game.
Fans hope the huge turnout at Saturday's match helps put St. Louis back on the soccer map in a big way.
"The show of support we had for the last game and this game I think only strengthens the chance of getting a good team, an MLS team here," said Jeff Rupp. "Maybe we'll get a stadium built for them and see where it takes us in the future."
Play was interrupted for several minutes in the second half when several fans dashed onto the field to shake hands with or even hug Real Madrid players.
The delay came right after a corner kick deflected into the net off defender Ricardo Alvarez to make it 3-0.
