ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - One of the biggest benefits of living in St. Louis? According to Kiplingers, it might just be the low cost of living.
St. Louis was ranked No. 9 on the annual list of the "10 Best Cities for Cheapskates." Kiplinger cited the abundance of free activities and relatively low cost of living as St. Louis' best qualities for penny-pinchers.
The Council for Community and Economic Research estimated that the St. Louis area's housing-related expenses fall 27 percent below the national average. The median home value is $160,400 -- $25,800 less than the national average. Rent is also cheap - costing an average of $766 a month compared to $1,110 for the nation as a whole.
While St. Louis topped the list in 2012, this year Omaha, Neb. took the top spot, followed by Ogden, Utah and Des Moines, Iowa.
