(Ed Staniowski's Mask Hockey Blog) -- Something did not sit well after the Blues were escorted out of the post season last spring, and now on the first day of training camp, I can finally begin to let that unpleasant feeling go.  Today, the Blues begin working out on ice, as a team, assembling the pieces that will be the 2013'-'14 edition of the St. Louis Blues.

Of course the underlying storyline at this year's camp is the abscense of one of the team's young and rising stars, defenseman Alex Pietrangelo.

Yesterday on training camp eve, general manager Doug Armstrong told Rene Knott that contract talks between the organization and Pietrangelo had broken down.  Armstrong did not give much details after his comments, and the team announced that it would not have anything further to say till further notice.

But Andy Strickland of truehockey.com writes that the word leverage is being tossed around rather loosely nowadays with the contract dispute.

"To be fair let's not act as if Pietrangelo has no leverage. Of course he does, he's the Blues best player and he's using his leverage as I write. Not playing is a big part of his leverage," writes Strickland.

GM Doug Armstrong wants his team to carry more swag this season and walk off the bus like they expect to win. In other words don't be afraid to act like you're good. I do know this, the Blues are a lot scarier to the opposition when #27 is on the bus.

The team has Stanley Cup aspirations and that task becomes significantly more difficult without Pietrangelo. Both he and the team know this.
