ST. LOUIS (AP) - The new tax that supports improvements to the Gateway Arch grounds and parks and paths in the St. Louis area is now in effect.
KMOX radio reports the 3/16-cent sales tax approved by voters in April took effect on Tuesday. It's expected to raise up to $780 million over 20 years for an upgrade of the area around the Arch, and to improve parks and bike and walking paths in St. Louis city and county.
The tax adds about 2 cents to a $10 purchase.
