ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KSDK) - A missing Missouri man is linked to an alleged sexual assault case and police say a family member of the alleged victim played into his disappearance.
Investigators say the suspect's former girlfriend knew all about the alleged abuse and didn't report it. Instead, she used the information to her advantage.
"It's something that a crime novel could be written about or a suspense novel," said Sgt. Todd Wilson with the St. Charles Police Department.
He says in his 25 year career he has never experienced a case with this many twists and turns. It started in June when police say Raymond Avett went missing, leaving suicide notes in different locations.
"The suicide was all a hoax," said Sgt. Wilson.
Police figured it out two months later when an officer pulled Avett over in Maryland for drinking in public.
"He told the investigator when he was interviewed he just needed time to think," said Sgt. Wilson.
Police say Avett faked his suicide because his former live-in girlfriend, Jennifer Callaway, found out he allegedly molested a family member.
Police say Callaway agreed to keep her mouth shut in exchange for Avett's St. Charles home, his SUV, and his boat. Now, Avett and Callaway are charged with concealing a felony but, Avett has not been charged with a sex crime.
"The prosecuting attorney's office will not be able to charge that right now due to Ms. Callaway's part in failure to report this and that also brings into question her testimony that she would give," said Sgt. Wilson.
Police say the alleged victim is safe, living with other family members.
Avett and Callaway are behind bars. Avett is being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond. Callaway is being held on a $200,000 bond.
