JUPITER, Fla. (KSDK) - The St. Louis Cardinals have extended general manager John Mozeliak's contract through 2016 and picked up the option for manager Mike Matheny for 2014, the team announced Thursday at their Spring Training facility in Jupiter, Florida.
Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr, said he was pleased that the team is keeping its baseball leadership in the front office and on the field together for at least two more years. "Mo has done an excellent job over the past five years and I have enjoyed working closely with him. We share the same vision for the Cardinals; continued excellence at the Major League level, while insuring future success with a strong player procurement and development program."
Mozeliak, 44, has served as the general manager of the Cardinals for the five past seasons (2008-2012) and the Cardinals have advanced to the postseason in three of those seasons, and earned one World Championship (2011).
Matheny's extension came as a surprise to the second year skipper, who said he's proud of that fact because he never wanted to assume anything.
"We are excited to extend Mike's tenure for at least the next two years," added DeWitt. "He did a remarkable job as a first-year manager, coming within one game of returning us to the World Series."
