Notre Dame, IN (Sports Network) - Garrick Sherman scored 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting to help the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a 65-48 win over the George Washington Colonials at the Joyce Center.

Sherman, a Michigan State transfer, came off the bench to lead the Fighting Irish (4-1) in scoring despite only playing 18 minutes. Jerian Grant scored 13 while Eric Atkins had nine assists for coach Mike Brey, a George Washington alumnus.

George Washington (1-2) struggled shooting all game, connecting on just 32.8 percent of its shots. Isaiah Armwood led the Colonials with 12 points but needed 15 shots to get them. He was the only member of the team to score in double figures.

The Colonials scored the first basket of the game but did not lead again after Notre Dame jumped out to a 22-11 lead midway through the first half and ended up leading by 11 at halftime. The Irish benefited from 22 points in the paint compared to just 10 for George Washington.

Notre Dame's lead was cut to nine at the 13:05 mark on a jumper by Lasan Kromah, but Pat Connaughton responded with a triple to give Notre Dame some breathing room. They led by at least 10 for the rest of the game.

The Irish had an 18-2 edge in points off turnovers but was on the short end of a 41-38 differential in rebounds.
