It's a beautiful story. Boy plays quarterback for the home-state team. Boy meets the prettiest girl in the state. Boy and girl like each other. They hold hands in pictures. Everything is perfect. Right?
It's a made-for-TV story, with two small problems: Alabama and Auburn.
The boy is Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron, who is within one win of leading Alabama to its second national championship in a row and its third in four years. McCarron has gone 24-2 since taking over at quarterback in 2011.
The girl is Katherine Webb, who in some circles goes by the title of MISS ALABAMA. Webb won that competition in January before finishing in the top 10 in the Miss USA competition in June.
The two are dating, according to multiple outlets. The star quarterback is dating the prettiest girl in town. It's a nice story.
So what's the problem? McCarron plays for Alabama, as noted. But Webb... Webb graduated in 2011 from Auburn, of all places. This is just like Romeo and Juliet, with Alabama as Montague and Auburn as Capulet. How will this ever work? Cross your fingers.
On a side note, it's nice to be a starting quarterback in the SEC.
On another side note, I promise you that a small portion of the Alabama fan base - I'd say about four percent - believes that Webb is a plant, and that Auburn is attempting some sort of Manchurian Candidate maneuver with McCarron heading into the title game and the 2013 season.
