St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Xavier Munford scored 24 points to lead the Rhode Island Rams as they held on for an 82-80 victory over the Saint Louis Billikens in thrilling overtime Atlantic 10 matchup at the Chaifetz Center.
Munford was 8-of-14 from the field while making four 3-pointers for Rhode Island (6-10, 1-2 A-10), which ended a two-game losing slide. Andre Malone (14 points, nine rebounds), Nikola Malesevic (14 points, five assists, three blocks), and Jordan Hare (10 points, nine rebounds, three blocks) all played significant roles in the win.
Kwamain Mitchell scored 29 points to go along with seven assists and six steals for Saint Louis (12-5, 1-2), which has now lost two in a row after a nine-game wining streak. Cody Ellis added 21 points off the bench. The Billikens' loss snapped their 10-game streak of victories at the Chairfetz Center.
Saint Louis led 29-26 at halftime after forcing Rhode Island into 11 turnovers in the first half. The Rams stayed very close by hitting 47.6 percent of their field goal attempts before the break.
In the second half, the Rams outscored the Billikens, 39-36, after shooting 63.6 percent from the floor. Munford hit a 3-pointer with 1:05 left to tie the game at 65 and neither side managed to produce any more points in regulation, creating a neet for an overtime session.
In overtime, the Rams went up, 82-77, after going 10-of-10 from the free-throw line. A Mitchell 3-pointer with two seconds left was too little too late.
Rhode Island earned a 34-27 rebounding edge and shot 55.1 percent from the field to overcome its 18 turnovers.
