NCAA Game Summary - College of Charleston at Western Carolina

Cullowhee, NC (Sports Network) - Andrew Lawrence drained a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to lift the College of Charleston Cougars to a 67-65 victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts in a Southern Conference battle at the Ramsey Center.

Trent Wiedeman registered a double-double of 16 points and 10 boards for Charleston (20-8, 12-4 SoCon) as it collected its eighth win in nine games. Adjehi Baru added 13 points and nine rebounds while Lawrence and Anthony Stitt tallied 12 points apiece.

Trey Sumler paced WCU (11-17, 8-8) with 24 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the field. Preston Ross chipped in 12 points off the bench for the Catamounts as they suffered their second setback in a row.

The Catamounts managed to build a 26-18 lead by the 5:52 mark of the first period, but Charleston closed out the half on a 12-2 run to take a 30-28 edge into the intermission. The Cougars outscored the hosts, 10-2, on second chance points in the opening 20 minutes to earn their slim advantage at the break.

Charleston was in control of the contest for the majority of the second stanza and managed to go ahead by as many as 12 points. WCU rallied late with a 9-0 run that tied the score at 65 with four seconds left, but Lawrence drew a foul which sent him to the charity stripe for his game-winning free-throw tries. Charleston connected on 12-of-23 attempts from the field in the second stanza.

The Cougars held a 42-38 edge in the rebounding battle and outscored WCU, 20-8, at the free-throw line in the game.
