Moraga, CA (Sports Network) - Matthew Dellavedova scored 20 points and handed out four assists as he helped guide the Saint Mary's Gaels to a 64-57 win over the BYU Cougars in a West Coast Conference battle at McKeon Pavilion.

Also scoring in double figures for the Gaels (23-5, 12-2 WCC) was Beau Levesque with 17 points, adding eight rebounds as the squad won a second straight outing and the 11th in the last 12 games overall.

The Cougars (20-9, 9-5) were paced by Brandon Davies who recorded a game-high 25 points and also cleared nine boards, but still BYU had a two-game win streak snapped with the loss. Tyler Haws produced 12 points and six boards.

BYU led by as many as seven points in the first half and thanks to an impressive 59.1 percent accuracy from the floor over the first 20 minutes of action, the Cougars were able to claim a 32-28 lead at the break.

After scoring 18 points in the paint in the first half, the visitors again attacked on the inside, leaning heavily on Davies to get the job done. The Cougars posted 14 points in the key, compared to eight for SMC.

The Gaels made only nine field goals in both the first and seven halves, so it was at the free-throw line, particularly in the second frame, where the hosts brought home the victory as they made good on all but one of their 17 opportunities at the charity stripe after intermission.

With the victory the Gaels, who outscored BYU at the free-throw line by a 22-12 margin, clinched at least a second-place finish in the WCC standings which means they would get a bye through to the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Haws went over the 1,000-point mark for his career in the contest, becoming just the second sophomore (Danny Ainge) in BYU history to reach that plateau.
