Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - The implications for the Wofford at The
Citadel matchup on Saturday are astounding, considering it is, indeed, just the
second week of the college football season.
But these two Southern Conference teams have their best shot at winning the
conference outright in 2013 with FBS-bound programs Georgia Southern and
Appalachian State ineligible for the title. Of the four likely candidates to
win the SoCon crown, two of them are featured in this game.
This early season meeting of two teams that run triple option offenses could
give the winner a leg up the rest of the way.
In their meeting last Oct. 27, a defensive stand allowed Wofford to hang on for
a 24-21 victory. The Bulldogs overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to cut the
lead to three, but couldn't fully rally past then-No. 7 Wofford.
The Citadel holds a 40-24-1 lead in a series that dates back to 1916, although
Wofford has won the past 14 meetings. At Johnson Hagood Stadium, however, the
Bulldogs hold an 18-10 advantage.
The Terriers have won nine conference openers since joining the SoCon 16
seasons ago, and have won their last three against Furman, Samford and Western
The last time these two programs met in September was back in 1998, which was
also the last victory in the series for The Citadel.
