Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Charles Ross rushed for 157 yards and an important touchdown to lead the Rice Owls to a 23-14 win over the Kansas Jayhawks in a non-conference bout at Rice Stadium.

Ross' rushing was key for Rice (1-1) as Taylor McHargue struggled by completing just 14-of-31 pass attempts for 169 yards along with two interceptions. Jordan Taylor caught five passes for 73 yards.

James Sims rushed for 109 yards on 19 carries for Kansas (1-1), which has lost 20-straight road games. Jake Heaps completed just 13-of-28 pass attempts for 157 yards and a touchdown and was intercepted twice. Tony Pierson hauled in four passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.

Both offenses struggled in the first quarter. However, Rice was able to put points on the board when Michael Kutzler intercepted a pass from Heaps and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown. It was Kutzler's first career interception.

After the interception and a pair of punts on their first three drives, the Jayhawks finally put points up on a 77-yard touchdown pass from Heaps to Pierson.

The offensive struggles continued for both teams but Rice was able to take a 13-7 lead at the break thanks to a pair of field goals from Chris Boswell.

Kansas took its first lead of the game late in the third quarter when Heaps scored on a one-yard touchdown run.

Boswell put the Owls back ahead when he managed to split the uprights from 56- yards out for a field goal.

An eight-yard touchdown run from Ross, with just over three minutes to play, gave Rice a 23-14 cushion.

Kansas then failed to score on its final two possessions allowing the Owls to pull out the victory.
