St. Louis (KSDK) -- Signs of the St. Louis summer Olympics in 1904 are prevalent on the Washington University campus.
The city hosted the first Olympics in the western hemisphere.
A portion of the stadium that houses Francis Field on the campus of Washington University was built for those games.
The stadium could hold 12,000 fans. In later years, it could host as many as 20,000 fans.
Francis Gym also hosted boxing and fencing, but it was called the Physical Culture Building during the games. The gymnastics equipment in the gym was donated by the Spalding Company.
Plaques and statues with the 1904 date are around Francis Field to commemorate the games. The torch also passed through St. Louis in 1996 for the Atlanta games and in 2004 for the Athens games.
