(KSDK Sports) -- Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said on Thursday that he was hopeful that injured starting third baseman David Freese could be ready to rejoin the team for Monday's home opener against the Reds.

On Friday, that hope moved one step closer to reality, as Freese made his first rehab appearance with the AAA Memphis Redbirds.

Freese went 1-for-4 with a ground-rule and two RBIs. He grounded out to third in the first inning, grounded out to shortstop in the fourth, lined double over the right field wall in bottom of the fifth, and struck out in the sixth.

Freese did not play in the second game of the Redbirds' doubleheader on Friday, but is expected to play tonight as Memphis continues its four game series with Oklahoma City.
