(KSDK Sports) -- The ace, Adam Wainwright got it done in typical fashion Sunday. Wainwright went 7 strong, giving up 5 hits along with one walk and one run, while striking out 11 Cubs batters to earn his long elusive 14th win of the season.
The Cardinals got on the board first in their half of the second when center fielder, Jon Jay doubled (22) on a ground ball to left fielder David DeJesus, scoring Yadier Molina scores. Four batters later, Matt Carpenter singles on a sharp ground ball to center fielder Junior Lake. Jay scored and Wong scored, giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.
In the seventh, the suddenly red-hot Jon Jay showed off his power, the other way, sending the ball out of Wrigley for his 6th home run of 2013, scoring Allen Craig and Yadier Molina.
But the story of the day was Wainwright, who appeared to have command of his best two pitches, his curve and his cutter, allowing him to dominate Cub hitters and help give the Cardinals another series win, taking two of three from the Cubs.
After reaching his 13th win last month, it would take Wainwright nearly another month and four starts to earn number 14.
