Frank Caliendo will make his ESPN debut on Sunday on NFL Countdown. Caliendo was part of Fox NFL Sunday for eight years, ending his relationship last year.
Fox replaced Caliendo with Rob Riggle (The Hangover), and it appears ESPN felt their NFL pregame was missing that dynamic element only a comedian has.
"As a sports fan, ESPN has always been the place to be," Caliendo told Bill Hofheimer. "This network is why I graduated with a broadcasting degree in the first place - and now I finally get to use my degree!"
Caliendo has done dead-on impressions of John Madden and Jim Rome for years. Now that he will be sitting next to Chris Berman, who does a great impression of himself, perhaps there will be a new character in Caliendo's bag set to debut.
The greatest question is why do football pregame shows need a comedian? That's a question rivaled only by why do football broadcasts need horrifically awkward sideline interviews with coaches at halftime?
